Making wine, beer, juice or any other beverage is a time-consuming and labor-intensive task. Each stage of production is important and can impact the quality and taste of the final product. Filtration is one of the import steps. For wine we filter to remove sediments such as grape solids, dead yeast cells, or crystallized acids, resulting in a more pleasant drinking experience. Filtration can also improve wine’s flavor, and it increases its shelf-life by removing microorganisms.
Before selecting a filter cartridge and media, you want to ask the four basic questions below:
1. What is the quality of filtration required?
2. What are the conditions (flow, pressure, temperature) of the process?
3. Is it a continuous or batch process? How large is the batch volume?
4. What are the material characteristics of the solids being removed?
3 MAIN FILTRATION STAGES
There are 3 main filtration stages in any beverage production:

Pre-Filtration Stage
Removes all unwanted large particles (coarse filtration) to make the beverage visually clear. For example, in the manufacture of soda, some raw products used may contain particles that can affect the quality and aspect of the final product. Bag filters, stacked lenticular filters and depth cartridges are commonly used for this step.
Fine Filtration Stage
Depending on beverage composition (solid content, turbidity, micro-organisms), a pleated cartridge will be used, with a pore size rating of 1 to 3 micron. The polypropylene and glass fiber pleated cartridges have a low pressure drop, high load capacity and efficiency. The glass fiber pleated cartridges also assist in haze removal due to the media’s inherent positive charge. This fine filtration step protects the membrane filter from being overloaded with particles and prematurely clogging.

Sterile/Final Filtration Stage
Sterile filtration is considered 0.2 microns or less. For the beverage industry this tight of filtration is not required for two reasons. First what you are consuming does not have to be sterile. Second in the case of wine filtering too tight may remove some of the complexity out of the wine. If required, Fiber X Pro has filter membranes and cartridges to fit your applications.
Final filtration is the last filter used before bottling. This filter is an absolute 0.65 micron for reds and 0.45 micron for whites. The recommendation is a highly asymmetrical PES membrane. It has a higher flowrate and throughput due to the structure of its membrane structure.
DEPTH FILTERS
Filter Bags | Filter bags are one of the most cost-effective choices for a wide range of filtrations, ranging from food and beverage to industrial chemical filtration. The micron ratings range from 0.5 micron to 100 microns, and coupled with our wide of filter bag material choices. It applies to the removal of particles of various sizes. PP, PET needle felt bags are suitable for nominal precision filtration, while nylon mesh bags are suitable for filtration at lower ratings. Light weight and low-cost filtering material offer high chemical and corrosion resistance. It follows the international standard and is compatible with bag filter housings of current mainstream brands.

Depth | SW Series String Wound Filter Cartridges are manufactured of structured loose outer layers and tight inner layers, offering true depth filtration for high dirt holding capacity and extremely low media migration. The main advantage of the string wound filter cartridge is its exceptionally high structural strength. Therefore, they can withstand higher PSID and severe operating conditions.

String Wound Filter Cartridge

Depth | UL Series String Wound Filter Cartridges are depth filters. The filter media is a continuous wound fiber with high-performance. All yarns are prewashed to get rid of contaminants and TOC, resulting in faster rinse up and startup. The length of the cartridge with a big filtration area is up to 70inch (1778mm) which reduces the number of uses for this filter cartridge with uniform low pressure drop and the required dimension of housings. The long service life and high flow rate result in lower investment and less manpower cost in many applications.

Glass Fiber | BS Series Filter Cartridges are made of glass fiber. The pleated glass fiber filter cartridges are highly efficient, good for the pre-filtration of gas and vent, and can be effectively used in a variety of industrial applications. The cartridge offers a large surface area for high flow rates and high dirt holding capacity, also reduces labor costs with less changing of the filters.

Depth | MHF Series High Flow Pleated Filter Cartridges are made from depth fine PP non-woven fabrics. The filter has a big diameter of 6.5 inch/165mm. The cartridge is designed with an outside to inside flow pattern, and with inner core. The long service life and high flow rate save investment and manpower.

Depth | HF Series High Flow Pleated Filter Cartridges are made of depth fine PP non-woven fabrics. The pleated filter cartridge is single open ended and in diameter of 6inch/152mm, inside to outside flow design ensures that the unwanted particles are trapped with the element. One HF filter replaces few standard 10" filter cartridges to reduce the operating costs and make change out quickly and easily for critical applications. The multiple layers with depth pleated design provides higher removal efficiency and longer service life than other cartridges of equal efficiency. All the PP configuration with good chemical compatibility ensures that can be used for wide applications.

Absolut Depth | FGF Series Filter Cartridges are absolute rated, pleated depth-type filters, constructed of 100% polypropylene material. These filters are available in absolute particle retention ratings from 0.1 to 50 micron and various end cap configurations to fit into the most standard housings. All components of the FGF series filter cartridges are FDA approved. The filter media and its support structure are thermally welded to the end caps, making integral filter cartridges of minimum extractables in a wide range of fluids and applications. All the filter cartridges are manufactured in a clean room environment.

FINE FILTERS
Polypropylene | SGH Series Filter Cartridges are comprised of multi-layers media. The unique construction results in a highly porous, continuously graded pore structure with a tighter inner layer and several outer prefilter layers to substantially increase the dirt holding capacity. This filter structure provides excellent flow rates at low pressure drop and high throughput while achieving submicron retentions, high efficiency, and extraordinary dirt holding capacity. The filter media and its support structure are thermally welded to the end caps, making integral filter cartridges of minimum extractables in a wide range of fluids and applications. FINAL FILTERS

VENT FILTERS
Polytetraflouroethylene | BHD Series Filter Cartridges feature hydrophilic polytetrafluoroethylene (PTFE) membrane. It offers excellent chemical compatibility with aggressive solvents and other fluids. Being hydrophilic, it does not require pre-wetting when used with aqueous solutions, and can be put into service immediately, maximizing operational service time.

Stacked Lenticular | Depth-Stack Filter Cartridges are available in multi-material filter sheets, which are widely used in pharmaceutical and food & beverage industries. The filter sheets are made from cellulose fibers filter aids. It has three functions of surface filtration, depth filtration and electrostatic adsorption. BDS series adopt domestic filter sheets, which shows excellent high throughout and cost-effective performance. Generally, larger particles in feed liquids are mechanically intercepted through three-dimensional and porous structure, while smaller particles and microorganisms are intercepted by positively charged electrostatic adsorption.
